Do you have a best friend?
What would you do for your best friend?
Would you be willing to sacrifice your inheritance for your friend?
David had a best friend, Saul's son - Jonathan. Back in David's time, a father's enemy was a son's enemy. If a father vowed to kill an enemy, the son would be bound by that vow. So what, then, led to Jonathan's action? Jonathan risked everything by warning David about Jonathan's father's plans to kill David. Jonathan would meet with David in secret and help David foil his father's plans. Jonathan was about the best a friend could be to David, even though Jonathan never abandoned his father. In fact, he died fighting the Philistines for his father.
Would you be willing to lay down your life for your friend? How about your family? Would you give your life for someone you have never met? For someone who has not even been born yet?
We have a friend who did just that for us. Yes, Jesus is that friend. He gave it all for you and me. He loves us so much, he gave his earthly life to save all of mankind, for generations to come. God loves us so much that He came to earth to walk among us, and then gave up his earthly existence in the most horrific and tortuous method of the day.
The old spiritual hymn says, "What a friend we have in Jesus...". If that is true, what would you be willing to do for Him? Would you lay down your life for Him? He did for you.
Would you at least be willing to tell someone about Him?
"If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it". (Mark 8:34-36).
